Olave Baden-Powell Society Tour – Day 2: England at its best!

20 Jun 17

Today dawned bright and sunny as the OB-PS members head off for the Lake District. First stop was of course Guiding related – Waddow Hall, one of the three Girlguiding Training Centres in the UK.

We were lucky enough to be able to tour around the house, and the statues of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell greeted us as we went up the stairs. In the Garden Room, we saw Lady Baden-Powell’s typewriter, and learnt all about the history of the building and its Guiding roots. The members were very impressed by the bar as well! There was also the compulsory stop at the shop – after all, every Girl Guide and Girl Scout loves a badge (including me!) and there were plenty on offer. It was lovely to start our tour with a touch of Girlguiding.

We then moved onto the market town of Clitheroe, and its Norman Castle. As luck would have it, there was a demonstration of medieval knights and ladies for some school children while we were there. The cannon fire took everyone by surprise, but it definitely added to the atmosphere. After a restorative snack of tea and scones (everyone is trying to be very British during this tour), we went to the Castle Museum.

Here we learnt all about the history of Clitheroe and the surrounding area. We also proved that we had good knowledge on natural history, which surprised even us! Unlike the school kids, we didn’t take part in the dressing up, but I think some people were tempted. The group then had some free time in Clitheroe to explore the market town, and enjoyed delights such as liquorice, freshly ground coffee and sausages rolls – all in all, a successful trip!

This evening we have checked into the Newby Bridge Hotel, and have been walking around the wonderful grounds and admiring the view over Lake Windermere. Tomorrow we will be travelling on Lake Windermere, as well as on a steam train, so look out for more details tomorrow!
