About Rhianna Goacher

Rhianna Goacher

Hi I'm Rhianna and I'm a VA Rep this summer in Adelboden, Switzerland. It's my first time in Switzerland and working for VA so I'm excited to meet the groups and have a great summer with everyone! I'm about to start my final year at Leeds University studying French and German after living in Germany for a year and I love films, hiking and travelling to new places!

Surbiton and 3rd Poynton chase some waterfalls…

18 Aug 17

It’s nearly time for us to say goodbye to Surbiton and 3rd Poynton Guides, it’s been a blast! The groups have been extremely busy these last few days in and around Adelboden, both spending Wednesday in the village bowling and enjoying the sun at the Panorama Pool (again!).

On Thursday we visited the spectacular Trümmelbach Falls – Europe’s largest subterranean water falls. The collection of 10 glacial falls drains the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau alone – that’s 20,000 litres of water per second (no wonder it was so noisy!).

A bird’s eye view of Surbiton Guides!

Next, 3rd Poynton and Surbiton headed up (in cable cars) to the small car-less village of Mürren, which sits at the foot of the Schilthorn (1638 m above the Lauterbrunnen valley).

The girls all took some time to sit with an ice cream and appreciate the scenery, before heading back down to Lauterbrunnen.

The groups’ last day here has been more relaxed. Everyone headed to the Woodcarver’s via Cholerenschlucht Gorge, a 100m long rock gorge with an impressive waterfall!

Afterwards, the girls headed to the Woodcarver’s to collect their handmade woggles. It was then time to hike to Our Chalet in the beautiful sunny weather!

3rd Poynton and Surbiton take Interlaken

15 Aug 17

3rd Poynton and Surbiton Guides have had an extremely busy start to the week in Switzerland, and wonderful weather to do it in!

The groups woke up bright and early on Monday morning to head to Engstligenalp via cable car. Once up there, it was a leisurely walk to the Cheesemaker’s where they saw different types of Alpine cheese being made – of course, there were tasters. In the afternoon, Surbiton decided to head into the village and go for a swim and 3rd Poynton spent the afternoon swinging from zip wires at Adventure Park Rehärti!

Ice cream for breakfast? Definitely!

Today, another early start saw the groups head to Interlaken via boat trip on Lake Thun, before which I managed to convince everyone that 10am was a completely acceptable time to have ice cream at the docks. The day of souvenir shopping ended in the Chocolate Show at Schuh Chocolatiers, where the girls got to see how different types of chocolate were made, before trying them all out, naturally.

Important scientific testing taking place…milk chocolate was the overall favourite!

Money well spent

Let’s hope the second half of the week is just as good as the first one for Surbiton and 3rd Poynton!

Sun, Fun and a Toboggan Run

13 Aug 17

Surbiton Guides and 3rd Poynton Guides have had a fantastic day in sunny Kandersteg! After a busy day of unpacking and then heading straight into Adelboden for a dip in the Panorama Pool on Saturday, the groups first visited KISC to buy some badges and enjoy the beautiful scenery on their first full day.

They then took the cable car up to Oeschinensee and had their lunch by the lake, some taking the opportunity to paddle. Then it was straight to the summer toboggan run for these groups, who all decided that one go just wasn’t enough!

It’s been a great welcome to Switzerland for Surbiton and 3rd Poynton, excited to see what the week brings!

Lapley Guides visit Interlaken

11 Aug 17

As the week draws to a close for this fun-loving group, they’ve decided to take this time to wind down and relax a bit. The group visited Interlaken on Thursday, opting to travel across Lake Thun by boat – always a beautiful journey, whatever the weather! When they arrived, they took the funicular up to Harder Kulm, undeterred by the rain and cloudy skies.

Grey skies over Lake Thun, but still a great view!

Following this was the eagerly-anticipated Chocolate Show at Schuh Chocolatiers, which included many free treats and samples! Just in case anyone was still hungry(!), a group trip to Mcdonald’s was in order, by which point it was time for this tired and full group of Guides to head back to Adelboden for the evening.

Lapley Guides have spent today visiting Our Chalet, an international Girl Guide/Girl Scout centre and one of five World Centres of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), ideally located right here in Adelboden. They’ll be spending their last night in Switzerland at a traditional Swiss evening!

We wish Lapley Guides a safe trip home, it’s been a pleasure!

Jungfrau day!

9 Aug 17

What a day yesterday – Lapley Guides made the long expedition to the Jungfraujoch, where the weather was unfortunately less than welcoming! The Guides had a great time at the Alpine Sensation and the Ice Palace, however, many ended the trip spending their pocket money at the Lindt chocolate shop – yum! After a quick hot chocolate to thaw out, it was time to head home.

Selfie time!

Huddling for warmth (featuring Rhia, a former Venture Abroad rep!)

Today the group are visiting Holzschnitzerei Trummer to collect their woggles and badges, all handmade at the Woodcarver’s!

Rain, rain go away…

7 Aug 17

A big welcome to Lapley Division Guides! The group arrived in high spirits to sunshine, but on Sunday during their trip to Kandersteg, the rain was relentless and the fog covered the whole of Oeschinensee! Still, not to be deterred, the group huddled under shelter for hot chocolate and chips.

Today, the Guides woke up early for a trip on the cable cars up to Engstligenalp and a visit to the Cheesemaker’s! This afternoon, the girls will be making a splash in Adelboden at the Panorama Pool. Excited to see what this group get up to next!
